On July 28, 2016 Mahasweta Devi, aged 90, cut loose the ties that bound her to mortal life and set off to live for ever in the hearts and minds of thousands for whom she toiled with the zeal of a crusader. She left behind a rich legacy of work unmatched in literary activism in Indian Literature. She was Hannah Arendt’s kindred spirit and Nadine Gordimer’s soul mate.
The book is a critical exploration of some of the subaltern issues in colonial and postcolonial contexts with special focus on Mahasweta Devi’s works. It examines the ways in which she handled the aesthetics of literature to expose the many sided exploitations and multiple oppressions of the subaltern communities in general and tribals in particular. The book explores the different sites of her activism which serve to interrogate the nation’s policy, polity and the socio-cultural construct. It serves to present a holistic analysis of her literary enterprise by approaching some of her novels, dramas and short stories.
